Children’s Illustrations

 When illustrating for children there is always a pre-existing story to work off of. With picture books I create character studies and a rough dummy mock-up of the envisioned book. I then create many preliminary sketches and play with text placement before creating the final illustrations.

Fragmentism

I have always been intrigued by the idea that everything and everyone that has ever existed, whether here on Earth or out in space, can in some way be connected by a straight line of invisible space. There are “lines” everywhere and they connect us altogether in some way – a giant network of lines filling every corner of space.

This idea inspired the style of painting that I’ve been creating for the past 10 years. I’ve named this style FRAGMENTISM. The images in most of these paintings are shattered or fragmented by criss-crossing lines which usually exit off the edge of the canvas or meet up again after passing through another plane.

My painting style does not involve a tremendous amount of planning and I am usually surprised at the outcome. They often have a spiritual or religious feel to them. I normally don’t have an image in mind when I go to attack the canvas. They just manifest themselves as I begin to work. Perhaps someday I shall work in the “proper” way, but for now my method seems to be working.

The painting above is an example of a series of paintings I painted using only my left hand. Being right-handed, I thought that using my left hand would free up the creative slump that I was experiencing.
